By Junior Firefighter Brandon Cole
March 21, 2017

Deputy Chief Cole received a phone call from a local mushroom company advising there was an attic fire in the mushroom house on the 1200 block of Newark Road. The owner thought the fire was extinguished with a garden hose, but wanted to be sure. For safety reasons, Deputy 23 notified the CCFB to alert a building response for the address.
At 1725 hours, Avondale, West Grove and Kennett as well as RIT from Longwood Fire Company were alerted. Deputy 23 and Asst. 24 (Mitchell) arrived with-in seconds with smoke showing from the attic area. Asst. 24 assumed the command, while Deputy 23 investigated. After investigating, it appeared the fire was extinguished with some hot spots and a smoke condition. Deputy 23 requested all units to continue in and established operations. Engine 23-1 arrived on the “A” side of the building and split their crew. Crew #1 reported to the attic, while crew #2 entered the interior of the mushroom house. Crews used TIC(s) to check for fire and extensions. Tower 24-1 arrived and set their aerial up to the roof on the “A” side. Rescue 25 (RIT) arrived and split their RIT crew between the “A” and “C” side of the building due to the different entry points. Engine 23-2 and Ladder 22 took the “C” side of the building and checked for extensions as well. It was determined the fire was extinguished. The fire was placed under control and reduced to the Engines from Avondale and the Tower from Kennett while crews soaked the area down. Companies cleared soon after.
