On April 25, 2016, the Avondale Fire Company was dispatched at 1539 hours for hay bales in the 700 block of Penn Green Road. Chief 23 made the response and was advised that Chester County Fire Board had received multiple reports of hay bales on fire. Lieutenant 23A arrived finding multiple bales on fire with multiple exposed bales. With this report, Chief 23 added an engine from Hockessin Fire Company and established command. Engine 23-2's crew arrived first and pulled 2" hand-lines. One hand-line was pulled to the seat of the fire and the other line was used to protect the exposers. Loaders were brought in to move the burning hay away from the other bales. Tanker 19 arrived and supplied Engine 23-2 on the Alpha side of the bales. The command requested three more tankers to assist with water supply. . Tankers 22, 24 and 36 were added to the assignment. Engine 8-2 and Tanker 27 covered our first due district. Command requested Engine 8-2 from Station 23 for more man power. Tankers 22 and 27 arrived supplying engine 23-1 on the Delta side and Tankers 24 and 36 assisted engine 23-2 on the Alpha side. The crews pulled a total of 5 hand-lines to contain the fire. Crews cleared the scene at 1840 hours. Engine 23-2 was still un-available due to the lack of hand-lines and water. The crews returned to the station to wash and repack all the hand-lines back on the engine. The crews also spent time cleaning the tools, trucks, and gear.

Special thanks to Engine 8-2, Tanker 27, Lancaster Tanker 52-1 and Engine 36 for covering our first due district during this call.
