The Avondale Fire Company along with West Grove, Hockessin, Kennett and Longwood Fire Companies were dispatched to the 500 block of Penn Green Road for a commercial fire reported as a mushroom house on fire. Engine 23-1 responded and received additional reports of the police on scene with a building fully involved. Engine 23-1 arrived with the First Due Engine assignment, laid a 5" supply line from the hydrant across the street and confirmed the police report of a mushroom house with fire showing. After further investigation, there were reports of possible entrapment in the apartment above the mushroom house. Engine 23-1 went in-service with a 300’ hand-line off the rear splitting the crew for fire attack and primary search. Engine 23-1 crew found the apartment well involved and began knocking the fire. Crew were pulled out soon after due to the building becoming unsecure. Ladder 22 and 25 were placed in-service with ladder pipe operations. Engine 23-2 supplied Ladder 22, while Engine 24 supplied Ladder 25. The fire was placed under control about an hour after arriving on scene. Crews handled multiple hours of overhaul before being cleared.

Deputy Chief Carroll had "Penn Green Command" for the incident.
