Around 2130 hours on Tuesday, May 27th the Avondale Fire Company was dispatched to the 1600 block of Baltimore Pike for a Motor Vehicle Accident. Chief 23 made the response and quickly arrived to find a single vehicle into an occupied residence. After an initial assessment was performed, it was reported that the vehicle had only 1 occupant, who self extricated from the vehicle and the residence. The home’s occupants were able to exit the residence unharmed however the residence was found to have major structural damage and deemed unstable.

Chief Cole established the "Baltimore Pike" command. Rescue 23 arrived with Deputy Chief Carroll, who took the operations roll and immediately went to work with shoring the residence to prevent any further damage or collapse. The use of Rescue 42 struts and cribbing were placed strategically throughout the building replacing the support structures damaged during the crash.

After initial stabilization was completed, crews taped off the area and evacuated out of the collapse zone. BELFOR Property Restoration company was then called to the scene to place more shoring material throughout the residence and allow the removal of the Rescue 42 struts. The use of inflatable air bags and hydraulic rescue tools were used to lift the vehicle and remove the residence's original concrete footings to allow for easier and safer vehicle removal.

Finally Blittersdorf Towing was called to the scene for vehicle removal. PECO was advised and secured the power to the building and the New Garden Township's code enforcement was advised of the damaged residence.

Crews cleared the incident and returned to service around 01:30 hours.

While operating on this incident, the company also handled a fire alarm with the assistance of New Castle County Station 19, Hockessin, as well as an additional EMS incident.
