Today, members of the Avondale Fire Company gathered in the center of Avondale Borough for an Easter boot drive. Volunteers were spread out on Route 41 with collection boots to receive donations of any amount from members of the public. Crews began around 0800 in the morning and ended just after 1100 hours.
Just as the boot drive began to pick up, Avondale Fire Company and surrounding mutual aid companies were dispatched to Kennett Borough for a reported residential fire. Since Engine 23-2 was already staged at the boot drive, they went responding immediately after dispatch. Chester County Fire Board notified units that a caller was reporting smoke coming from an unknown source.
Engine 23-2 arrived as the first due engine laying a 5" supply line and pulling past the building to allow room for the incoming ladder truck. Crews then pulled a 300' 1"3/4 attack line to the front door of the building. Chief 25 (McCarthy) held command while Deputy 24 (Melton) held operations. Crews from 25 and 24 checked an upstairs apartment where the smoke originated from but only found an odor.
The incident was then scaled back after the situation was placed under control. Mutual aid crews helped 23 repack both the 5" supply line and 300' attack line.
After crews returned and finished the boot drive in Avondale, they then made their way down to the Stoked BBQ & Grill food truck in Hockessin for lunch. Avondale Fire Company would like to extend a thank you to the anonymous customer who paid for our lunch today! It was greatly appreciated!
