August 21, 2023

Shortly after 1800 hours, the Avondale Fire Company was dispatched to a reported vehicle on fire in a junkyard in the 100 block of Old Limestone Road in New Garden Township.

Chief 23 made the response on dispatch and was advised by the Chester County Fireboard (CCFB) that the caller advised flames were coming from the engine compartment with a nearby exposure to the mower shop. Engine 23-2 responded quickly after dispatch due to the in-house duty crew, with the tanker and ambulance following behind. While enroute, CCFB advised Chief 23 the caller was now stating that the building was catching on fire, which upgraded the assignment from a vehicle to a building fire.

This upgrade added Hockessin, West Grove, Kennett, Longwood, Cranston Heights, and Po-Mar-Lin (Unionville) Fire Companies.

Hockessin's Rescue-Engine arrived to find a vehicle with its engine compartment fully involved, exposed to the building Crews pulled a handline and began fire suppression. Chief 23 arrived just behind Rescue-Engine 19 and established the "Avondale Command."

Engine 23-2 arrived as the second due engine accessing the driveway on the "A" side, assisting Hockessin's crews with extinguishing the fire and checking the building for any fire extension.

Engine 23-1arrived as the third due engine laying a supply line to the scene from a nearby hydrant. Due to the fire being knocked down quickly, the supply line was not used.

Further investigation found no extension to the building and the assignment was held to units on the scene.

Avondale Fire Company thanks the crew from West Grove's Engine 22-1 for covering the Avondale local for the duration of the incident.
