At 0937 hours, the Avondale Fire Company was dispatched to the 8800 Block of Gap Newport Pike in New Garden Township for a reported trash truck on fire.
The original caller stated that the engine of the trash truck had caught on fire and was starting to spread to the drivers cab. Squad, Tanker, and Ambulance 1 made the response right after dispatch, along with Chief 23. Crews arrived on location and confirmed the report of an active fire coming from between the drivers cab and the compactor.
Squad 23 deployed an 1.75" attack line and quickly knocked down the fire before it spread to any further part of the truck. Crews then soaked down hotspots and used thermal imaging cameras to check for any possible fire extension in either the cab or the compactor; no extension was found.
Once the fire was placed under control, units stood by and awaited tow crews from both Blittersdorf Towing and Nulls Towing to remove the trash truck off the roadway.
Crews finally cleared the scene at 1049 hours.
